I know this post is a tad late, but considering Turtle Monkey was too cranky to tell her Fourth of July story, I decided to post my own. This holiday used to be one of my favorite holidays, until I outgrew the need to set off massive amounts fireworks. However, I still enjoy the barbecues. I also think some of the appeal is gone for me because it's easier to obtain fireworks where I live now compared to where I grew up. We used to delight in being the family that set off the most fireworks every year. We accomplished this by sending my oldest brother out of state to secure at least a trunk full every year. Lately, I've been content to watch others spend the money and take the risk.
This year I went to a friend's party and needless to say, his neighbors have not outgrown the need to set off massive amounts of fireworks. As a matter of fact, according to my friend, they easily dwarfed any prior celebrations. This year they set off what we estimated to be at least a thousand dollars worth and that is a conservative estimate. They were still setting them off when we left. I hope he can actually get some sleep tonight, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Good thing he is a writer and has a flexible schedule. Happy Belated Fourth of July!
